[Day 3 - EE to ME] Tournament of the Bound

Tournament of the Bound
Event Type: Social Event
Influence Cost: 5
Participants: Unlimited
Timeslots: Early Evening to Mid Evening

Description: Lord Gratahan is throwing party for his new wife and has decided on a theme of the Tournament of the Bound, this is where people bring slave artisans and entertainers and then have them battle to the death for the enjoyment of the guests. It is brutal, cruel, and quite popular among the Sith who see slaves as the lowest form of thinking being, too weak to free themselves and only fit for slaughter.

Early Evening is a pure social hour of being seen and enjoying the amenities of Lord Grathan, he has provided shuttles to and from Dromund Kaas they leave in Early Afternoon and arrive at Early Evening and a second set of shuttles that leave Late Evening and arriving at Early Night on Ziost.

Rules: First the player should purchase a slave for this party or not. Some Sith see this as barbaric and make a statement by not bringing a slave this tends to fall on deaf ears but can be quite bold and make a statement.

Step 1 – Participate or Not

If the player chooses to participate they need to find a suitable slave, for the spirit of the tournament they should find a non-combat slave that will entertain and amaze the guests. The Influence cost of the event covers this step even if they choose not to get a slave, players are not, despite their social position, considered slaves for this event.

This is Barbaric: The player chooses to make a statement, make a Charm, Deception, or Leadership check versus Easy to earn 5 Influence. They can increase that difficulty to Hard (1 red and 2 purple) if they choose to make a real statement and earn 10 Influence if they succeed or they can opt to increase that difficulty to Daunting (2 red and 2 purple) if they so chose and earn 15 Influence if successful. They are done and need not participate in the rest of the event.

A Proper Choice: The player makes an Education or Perception check at Average, failure means they have made a poor choice and the Contestant has An ability score of 1 in Brawn and 1 in Presence. Success means they have a Contestant with an ability score of 2 in Brawn and 2 in Presence. Each Advantage can be spent to purchase one of three skills for the Contestant, Battle (Brawn), Amaze (Presence), and Perform (Presence). Triumph grants an Additional Ability point and a Despair reduces an Ability by 1, to a minimum of 1 if Ability are at 1 then reduce Wounds by 1. Threat reduces the starting wounds of the Contestant by 1 per Threat to a minimum of 1; all Contestants begin with 5 wounds.

Example: With that roll he has a Contestant with Brawn 2, Presence 2 and decides to purchase Amaze 1, and starts with 5 Wounds.

Darth Joey Joe Joe Perception - A Proper Choice: 2eP+1eA+2eD 2 successes, 1 advantage
ImageImageImageImageImage

Step 2

Are you not Entertained: The Contestant, not the player, must perform for the guests; they must make a Perform check at Simple and will earn 5 Influence. Instead they can make a Perform check at Average to earn 10 Influence and suffer a wound, or if they feel very bold they can have the Contestant make a Hard Perform check for 15 Influence and suffer 2 wounds.

The Big Finish: The Contestant makes an Average with a setback, nobility and Sith are hard to please, Amaze check and if successful earns an additional 5 Influence as they cap off their performance or work with a big flourish for the guests.

Step 3

Smash Brothers: The Contestant is forced to fight for their life, they must survive 3 rounds of battle to earn 5 Influence. Each round the Contestant makes an Average Battle check, if they win they reduce their Wounds by 1, if they lose they reduce it by 2. If the Contestant is reduced to 0 or less wounds before the end of their third round they lose and earn nothing. Meaning they need at least 1 wound at the end of Round 3 to be considered a winner.

Rewards/Outcome: Influence can be earned up to a Maximum of 20 Influence.

Striking example, Kristal only brought along Weaver who was assisting her as her assignment upon their arrival on Ziost was decided. It was, in it's very nature, a statement upon the future of the Empire. That slaves, and the institution it has created were not only not required but a barbaric practice that shamed the glory of the Empire. A sentiment, if she had ever been asked, Kristal Serasai herself may very well have offered in no lesser words.

Instead, she attended the evening and mingled with the other guests. A celebration for another wedding, so soon after her own, was something of an interesting oddity.

Jaheem arrived at the event with his attendant in tow not bringing a slave for this wasteful affair. Jaheem was not one for parties and this was a party of extra extravagant waste, the waste of good labor stock. Jaheem had no issue with salvery, those who were too weak to break their own chains needed to be guided by those more powerful. However he detested the waste of hardy workers on such frivolous blood sport.

If asked about it he would make his points diplomatically, without offering insult to his hosts or others who have chosen to participate.

Lord Gratham was about to receive a rebuffing holo. The next to present her case against the event was Lord Bellious. Doused in Darkness, with blood dripping from her fingers (Darkest Ritual, 3 Wounds), she gazed at the sadistic lord with eyes that must have been fiery yellow-bronze behind the blue static.

"If you enjoy violence so much, Lord Gratham, why don't you partake in it in person. I would gladly watch how one of your slaves tears you apart, showing your weakness. Until then, wallow in decadence on your own account."

Earlier that Day

"What do you mean, I can't enter?" Dino flares his nostrils in frustration.

The functionary stammers at the huge Trandoshan. "Well, we aren't allowing gladiators...or slaves to, you know, enter themselves."

"So...let me get this straight. You are completely fine with untrained, completely unprepared schmucks going in who don't want to be there and are terrified to die...but a slave who actually wants to, and who actually might make it an interesting fight...to entertain the Sith. A group who enjoy violence and tend to lash out at their minions whenever they, say, get bored. As in, from a boring and uninteresting fight put together by scrubs. That is what you want?"

"Ummmm...." The functionary's eyes seem to dart back and forth, his voice going up an octave. "Yeeeeeeeees?"

Dino snorts. "I'll be back."

------------------------------

Dino, being of the "poor" and "xeno" sort, happened to know some of the more desperate parts of Ziost. The empire liked to brag about its low unemployment...for its "citizens". There were plenty of those who lived in the cracks, and Dino knew where to look for the desperate.

"It will be a rough night. Make no mistake. But if you get through, you'll have a full belly by the end."

It turns out to not be a great offer, and Dino can only get the most desperate.

It turns out the the scrub, unsurprisingly, is not very good at this. He has no charisma, but for a while it looks like he might go the distance. In the end though, he drops.

Dino turns to the officiant. "Maybe let the real fighters in next time, hmm?"

The man glares at him and point to the door. "GET OUT!"

Accompanied by his wife Sylvain made sure that he voiced his similar opinion that this kind of use of slaves was rather gauche. The gladiator pits of Zygerria at least trained warriors to bring a sense of spectacle and chance at freedom and greater productivity in the Empire. This was much like watching children fight, but with blades.

by Col. Hala Moraal
When the party shuttles left Ziost Hala took care to assign some of her Kelwraiths to the security retinue and secured aboard some of her miniature droids, courtesy of the belated Lord Nemerosch. Using her proxies, she kept tabs on the shuttles and the mood, and worked with Elise to carefully tailor a script to make her apologies. Each transmission provided raw information which the warrant officer could feed into an algorithm which tried to predict inoffensive ways of saying things given the current trends in the courts of the Empire's heart. Part of her wished she could go, if only to be in her home system, but there were other things that needed doing and one more unpleasantness would only add to the pile.

When the time came, she hooked herself up to an audio-recording system and sat at her desk, flags for the Empire and her unit flanking either side of her in the rear of the frame. With the framing correct, she began her address.

"Congratulations, Lord and Lady Gratahan," spoke the carefully curated holo-recording of Colonel Moraal," I hope you enjoy the evening. I am sorry to miss such an extravagant affair, even though there may never be one of its like again. The fallout of yesterday's events demand resolution, so I may miss many affairs such as this until the security situation has improved. I congratulate you again on your nuptials."

A holo displaying Lady Lucinia Malveaux, dressed in full noble attire, her makeup impeccably done, flickered to life. Even at the small size of a hologram, she managed to look regal, her chin tilting upwards.

"My dear sir." She flashed a smile. It was not without charm, but most of the force of her personality came from the Dark Side energy suffusing her. "I do congratulate you on your wedding, truly I do. But I'm afraid I must offer my regrets, for I won't be able to attend."

Sadly, she shook her head. Normally, this would have scattered a few blonde hairs, but not now, not as thoroughly put together as she was. "But I'm afraid that a lady of my station, a Malveaux, simply can't attend an event which has slaves pitted against each other in fights to the death. Perhaps in the olden days, when decadence was the norm, but really, in today's Empire?" She brought a hand to the corner of her mouth, haughty laughter echoing perfectly over the holocom speakers. "Really, it just can't be done."

Another smile flashed, cold and obviously insincere. "As I said, I'm sure you understand. My best to the both of you. Begin as you mean to go on." Raising one hand, she gave an elegant wave, then winked out of existence.

Jo'ren Rath was many things, but a fan of slavery was not one of them. With significant assistance from Lt. Hin, and the inspiration of his Massassi brethren, Lord Rath delivered his rebuke. Surprisingly it was about as politely done as Colonel Moraal's, although that was mostly because Lt. Hin knew what she was doing.

"Lord and Lady Grathan, thanks for the invite. When I heard there would be gladiatorial combat, I thought - Hey, sounds fun, wonder how much punishment the groom can take? So imagine my surprise. Slaves. Being made to fight each other. When we have plagues to cure and wars to win?" He went off script a little. "It's not even entertaining, look at that Trandoshan over there <Jo'ren gestured towards Dino>, he's ready to get his fight on and you had him pick out a chef?!"

He shook his head, but his tone remained polite and upbeat. "Still, it's your wedding and I've said my piece. I thank you again for the invitation even though your 'entertainment' makes my blood boil." A glance over at Ashley. "Warm wishes on your wedding day, and may be the last time the Empire ever sees this sort of display."

Xyll managed to pick a slave without too much trouble; and they seemed solid enough. It was unfortunate that they were hiding a sprained ankle, which she somehow missed. It was unfortunate that everyone else seemed to not be participating in the fun, but that just meant more fun for Xyll, right?

She'd instructed her slave to pump up the crowd... which he only half-way succeeded at. Really, she shouldn't have expected much, but a modicum of entertainment was demanded. Fortunately, he landed the finish better than he did the whole routine itself, and a few half-hearted clapping hands could be heard.

And then? Then it was time to fight. He took a first swing to the jaw, before he gut-punched his opponent in a magnificent blow... aaand, then his ankle served to be his downfall, quite literally as his opponent bashed his skull in while he was on the ground. There was no coming back from that.

"Useless!" she shouted into the arena in anger, and as she did, without even considering the potential consequences, she pushed and pulled through the force until the corpse of her slave was upright once more, before it seemed to fling itself against its opponent in supernatural rage, and managing to crush the other slave's skull in retaliation, complete with Wilhelm-scream finish. Blood went flying everywhere.

Xyll was not amused, but her little act of force-imbued retribution cooled her anger at least.

by Shelzais Sek
A wedding gift from Shelzais Sek was delivered to the happy (happy??? Maybe?) bride and groom!

It was nicely packaged in a box with three layered compartments. The first and largest contained a beautiful bloodwine serving set--pitcher, cups, etc. The second contained a holotransmitter.

Smartass Sek wrote:"My dear Lord Gratahan. Lady Gratahan." Shelzais is dressed as if for a night out, a glittering firesilk scarf around her neck above the open collar of her jacket and the plunging neckline of her dress. "So sorry to miss your 'do, but you know, these things aren't quite to my taste. If it were real fighters that might be one thing, but, well..." she drawled, "take this little piece of work you've just unwrapped." Her gesture was a bit vague and perhaps not aimed precisely at the delicate metal-and-glassware gifts, given that she wasn't actually physically present. "Nice, isn't it? You wouldn't use it to smash rocks with, eh? Well, maybe you would, Gratahan old fellow. It is the signed work of a slave artisan, after all. Smart kid, beautiful hands, would last about thirty seconds in your ring. Personally, I'd rather somebody kept him around so he can keep making more pretty things that bring one pleasure."

She shrugged. "But if smashing works of art is to your taste, well, don't worry, old fellow. I've got you covered there too. Sek out."

In the last layer of the box, under the transmitter, was a sturdy hammer decorated with a large ribbon bow. It would definitely make short work of the glassware, though one probably wouldn't look very dignified doing it.

To be an assistant to a Sith Lord was terrible, terrible work. Camilla held the commlink with sweaty palms and an uneasy expression. She hadn't been trained for this! All she ever had to do was study, study, study and relay facts to her master. Now Dayana was not here and Camilla was in a den full of blood thirsty Sith.

At the very least, it seemed like many agreed that the slave fighting was barbaric. But Dayana's message took it one step further. Camilla coughed a few times and announced the scion of House Valthren's name, titles, and so on. Very boring stuff.

When the masked redhead came onto display, her demeanor was as magnanimous as ever. "My fellow lords, this is a waste of so much potential." She raised her arms with a radiant smile. "Surely fighters are useful, yes, if we were to direct them towards are true enemy." Her expression changed to one of disappointment. "And yet, what about all the others? The ones who are capable yet sacrificed for mere moments of entertainment?

"Camilla! Begin your reports."

"Yes, my lord," the assistant squeaked. She paged through her prepared information. "Twi'leks are capable of withstanding far greater heat thresholds," she gave as an example, "Duros have enacted numerous starship advances which have allowed the Republic Navy to compete with ours." She droned on about facts, trembling in her spot.

By the end of it, Dayana was back to her regal posture. "I entreat you all: we speak of chains that shackle us from our potential. How are these fighters any different? Just think of what achievements we'd accomplish with the full might of the Empire's people behind it."

Dayana continued her radical speech and concluded with thanking Lord Grathan with providing her with this opportunity. Camilla pulled at her collar and scurried off, hoping that she'd go without notice.

The Korriz witch arrived to the party in the spirit of things. She wasn't really much for parties, but hearing blood sport she was intrigued. While she listened to others denounce the practice, she just shook her head. These creatures held no merit to society, they were frivolous. Oh, yes, please, send them to the labor camps, these frail things meant to dance and cavort and sing. Yes, surly they will last long in the mines and the factories. Sight, what a pointless waste. They were bred for entertainment, and thus they were to entertain.

Stepping down to the slave pits she looked about the stock present. Passing by a few that seemed too meager or young to be any good for anything, she settled on a healthy looking twi'lek house girl. Clearly fed, and with enough skill to possibly be of amusement, the taskmaster thrust her onto the stage.

Knowledge: Education = 1 success, 1 threat
ImageImageImageImageImage
Brawn 2, Agility 2, Wounds 4

The woman, as she stepped into the spotlight could do nothing but pray for her life. She appealed to the irritated crowd for mercy and sympathy. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to find anyone who would take up her plight, but aside from hollow platitudes about barbarity, none stepped in to help her. So, as the crowd grew weary, the taskmaster struck her sending her to the floor.

Perform = 1 failure, 1 threat
ImageImageImageImage
(-1 wound for Average Difficulty)

As she rose, she was in no condition to perform any kind of impressive feat. And while she did finally start a dance, by this point it was too late. The crowd could care less and she was yanked from stage and sent to the battle pit.

Amaze = 0 successes, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImage

But unskilled and hopeless, she fared no better here. She artlessly tried to block her foes attack. A foe who was far more motivated in living that the twi'lek was. And so, time after time, her fellow slave opened wound after wound.

Smash Bros: Round 1 = 0 success, 2 advantage
ImageImageImageImage
(-2 wounds)

Trying to cling to life, she bellowed a cry and charged at her opponent. Thrown off balance by the sudden action, she struck true and opened a large gash in the other slave's shoulder. Jun-Tsu, however, had had enough of this. The girl was useless to all, and would never last the third round. She was weary of this twi'lek and so was everyone else, and so, she raised a hand, fingers held in talons, and simply letting the hand drop, so too did the slave woman, dead. "Mein apologiez, mein Lordz, I zhought zhe vould hawe more in her."

At that she simply left the pit with a smile to mingle.

Smash Bros: Round 2 - 2 success

(-1 wound; Dead)

Jan is her usual smiley self throughout the tournament.....until the time comes for her slave to perform.

"Lords and ladies it is with great and humble joy that I present N'Zzi Korath"
She gestures to the young Chiss woman who looks rather embarrassed
"N'Zzi is something lower than a slave for you see....she is an intern."

Several of the more business minded nobles nod knowingly.

"Interns labour for years without pay, performing the most menial tasks, lured in by the lie that they will one day have gainful employment....I find that false hope quite intoxicating. N'Zzi....show them what you can do."
The intern steps up to a low small table and hits a bit....beginning a Czerka brand pyrotechnic show.

At one point a holographic Dragon is coordinated with real fire from Czerka droids as it shoots down a republic ship and eats its passengers....at another point Sith are break-dancing.

Jan shrugs and hopes leads Sith to employ more interns and less slaves....she doesn't watch the actual blood sports at all.
