Papers Please

Event Type: Non-Combat, Game of Chairs, Bonus Event
Influence Cost: None
Participants: Unlimited
Timeslots: Mid Morning to Mid Afternoon

Description: Papers please.

Although not mandatory those that submit to additional screening will be thoroughly vetted and potentially cleared to access sensitive areas of the Empire. This will require navigating the labyrinthine halls of Imperial bureaucracy and make sure that all forms are filled out in triplicate, especially Form 33-4R-7, without that you can't even be cleared to fill out forms G56-9XQ or T55-7h and without a T55 how will you even be ready to fill out the G6-RY-788?

Sharpen your datapad and strap in because this is going to be a long morning.

Rules: First step, are you a Sith if so please enter the expedited line for Sith. Sith can skip Step 1 and Step 2 and report directly to Step 3. Every 2 advantage can give a boost die on the next roll and every two threat adds a setback to the next roll.

Step 1 – Submit Forms: This is a Knowledge Core Worlds or Knowledge Education check at Average with two setback dice due to the number of forms and protocols one has to deal with. Failing this step means they are missing crucial forms which increases the Difficulty of Step 2 to Hard.

Step 2 – Interview: This is a short one-hour interview with Customs and Public Security officers, this requires completing a Cool or Discipline check at Average with a setback due to the scrutiny, if an alien add another setback and if a non-Imperial citizen add another setback as well. Failing this step upgrades the difficulty of the next Step by one.

Step 3 – Formal Review: This is a review of the forms, roll 1d10 on a roll of 7 or higher you have miraculously completed every form correctly! You are done! If not then you need to correct your forms this requires a Deception, Knowledge Education, or Cool check at Hard. Succeeding at this roll means the player is done after the Late Morning slot.

Failing this roll the player is subjected to a more formal interview that lasts until Mid Afternoon before being released.

Rewards/Outcome: If completed the player is injected with a subdermal chip that will flush out of the system within two weeks time. While the chip is place, Suspicion is reduced by 10 points. If the chip is removed during play Suspicion is increased to 66 or increased by 10 whichever is higher.

by Raela Ausar
Raela sighed as she looked across at the interviewer, her flat expression making the man swallow nervously as she stared him down. "Really?"

"... Yes, my lord. We need a couple of forms..."

"This is idiotic." Despite that, she took the datapad to start correcting the forms they already hand on her, finding an entry in one of the buried subforms where they had spelled her first name with two Ls instead of one. Once that was finished, she tossed the pad onto the table, expression annoyed. "There. Now let's get this done, I have a day to get to."

"Yes, my lord."

Trailing along behind his Master, Ilar was not as fortunate and a bushel of paperwork was shoved in his face.

"But, but...I'm with her." He exclaimed as he pointed to Raela, but his protests were ignored and the papers were very confusing.

When he had finally completed what he could, there were many blank spaces and he was marked as needing further evaluation. Thankfully he was able to convince the interviewer that as a slave many of the questions were irrelevant to one of his station.
Interview (at hard after previous fail): 1eA+3eP+3eD+2eS 2 successes, 1 threat

But just as they were about to let him go, some know nothing bureaucrat had questions about why he had even completed the paperwork and wasn't just listed as an asset on the forms of his Master. GIven Raela had already passed through, Ilar let out a sigh....it was going to be a long day.

by Tyr
Tyr considered himself to be obedient, a good and loyal slave of the Empire, if not a citizen. Thus, he made his way to the customs offices for additional screening. The customs agent looked at the shistavanen's forms and sighed in a sort of existential despair, looking up balefully at the Tyr, pushing one of the forms back towards the hulking wolf-creature, and pointing to one of the fields. "This is unreadable," the shistavanen's handwriting was barely legible at all, and he scowled as he took the forms back and painstaking copied the information onto new forms, with fewer smudges this time.

He stood in the queue, impatiently shifting from foot to foot. Several other applicants waiting on their turn began to sweat and shift nervously, a few decided they would come back later. Eventually, Tyr was back at the counter, slapping the triplicate-filled forms in front of the bored-looking agent, a different one to last time. Inured by years of bureaucracy, the agent ignored the shistavanen's menacing demeanour and processed the forms. A robot arm slid out, injecting the subdermal chip, and Tyr was free to go.

by Sylvain Torsin
Sylvain arrived at the spaceport early mid-morning to put himself through the screening process as quickly as possible. His lightsaber and noble birthright saw him reach the front of the line quickly and he met the screening administrator with a polite nod.

He pulled out his datapad and transferred the requisite forms to the administrator saying, "I think you'll find everything in order."

After examining the documents for a short while the administrator looked up with surprise and nodded, "Surprisingly... yes... They are in order. Thank you, Governor Torsin."

Sylvain smiled and moved to be processed. Years of pointless bureaucratic training occasionally paid off.

Malorus was happy to skip the line. Unfortunately, he was slightly off on his forms.

Forms: 1d10 6

The interview went mostly well. It was quick, though Malorus probably could have made a better impression.

by Col. Hala Moraal
Hala waited in line, opening the pouch on her belt to check on the datacards containing the forms. Elise had prepared them, promised her that they would be in order and that everything had been prepared. While her new assistant had indeed prepared all the forms, they were from two cycles ago and she'd need to start over. Thankfully, she had plenty of time to make progress on them before her initial interview. Standard security briefing bullshit. She tuned most of it out, nodding every now and then to indicate she was still listening, and continued her paperwork.

When it came time to turn everything in..... well. She had wondered if the system would accept her recitation of her history for the past 15 years. Or rather, if she was giving the system the record she thought the system was expecting. Something didn't match up though. She was flagged for further interview. More time wasted, sitting in a metal metal chair, in a metal box. Glancing up at the mirrored glass, wondering if anyone was looking back at her from the other side. They sent in a lieutenant to interview her. Cute. Inexperienced. Green. All she had to do was produce her identification, indicating that she was recently assigned to General Unjin and that was all it took.

That, and several hours of paperwork during which she was unable to focus on something more productive.

by Jaheem Abasi
Jaheem sighed deeply, it made no sense that he, not only a sith but an inquisitor whose job it was to hunt the enemies of the empire, should be subject to such a screening. He filled out pointless paperwork when an even more pointless man told him he had filled out parts incorrectly. Jaheem had little patience left at this point, he looked to the paper pusher and his eyes flared the red and bronze color becoming more pronounced against the black "I have little time for these trivial matters, take care of it." The cowed attendant recoiled a bit but the fear had taken hold and he nodded rapidly before giving Jaheem the injection and releasing him.

by Rax Nam
In the end, Rex knew that he'd be seen with suspicion in the system just on the point of being a non-human to begin with. But he full knew this was going to be a right pain in the ass, which is why he tended to avoid this sort of thing to begin with. It brought him flashbacks to when he signed up for the Republic Army to begin with, the mounds of paperwork. But this... seemed to triplicate itself for sheer fun.

Step 1: This almost seemed to be the easy part. He found each piece of paperwork and filled it out with his scrawling take on basic. He almost thought about writing in Cathar for fun, and it seemed that he did when it wasn't the most important, but at least with this first time, he sped through things. It seemed to make the handlers at the differing queues almost apoplectic how easily he did the task, which he did with a smile on his face. He didn't even have to bribe anyone...

Paperwork: 2eA+2eD+2eS 2 successes, 4 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Step 2: "What is your purpose? Why are you here? What is a Cathar doing here? You must answer us more quickly."

The grilling was one of the tougher hours of his life, and he'd seen open combat. There were times that he was just about intimidated by the grilling and gave a few answers that weren't perfectly sound, but by and large he still managed it with aplomb, even getting to know the guard a little more in his own way.

Step 2: The Grilling: 2eP+1eA+2eD+5eS 1 failure, 3 threat, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Step 3: The Fixing.

In the end, he was finally out of the area with the stack of papers to make sure everything was in order. It wasn't. He had to go through the stack again and again, a couple of different lines while others went through with no issue. But he had issues, for sure. It was certainly designed to make someone like him give up, but perseverance and the pursuit of the credits for sticking around Jan Melomar... Well even though it took him the better part of the morning he finally got through it all.... With most of his wits.

1d10 Error Checking: 1d10 6

Step 3: The Fixing: 2eP+1eA+4eD+1eS 0 successes, 1 threat

by Dino Brado
Dino is a little off balance as he steps into the office. He understood that he needed a higher clearance level with a number of the upcoming events...but he honestly didn't know where to start when it came to planetary legal matters, especially in his curious position of (ex?)-slave.

Eventually, he settles on the form that discusses property, which he assumes he will be treated as for this small petty insult.

Papers Please-Step 1: 2eA+2eD+2eS 1 failure, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

[Extra setback, Hard Difficulty for Step 2]

It turns out, that would start things on a bad note.

"You're submitting as...property?" The interviewer quirks an eyebrow.

Dino nods and shrugs. "My master used to do these for me."

Papers Please-Step 2-Cool Check-Extra difficulty and setback for failed roll, 2 setback for being an alien and non-Imperial citizen for a total of 4: 1eP+1eA+3eD+4eS 0 successes, 2 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
(Upgrade step 3 and add setback)

"Oh, and you're applying under...Instructor Brado?" The interviewer asks.

"No, I've changed hands since then. I am now under the services of Lord Bellious."

"And nothing in your file about that..."

Papers Please-Formal Review Step 1: 1d10 3
Papers Please-Formal Review Step 2-Hard Cool check with upgrade: 1eP+1eA+2eD+1eC+1eS 0 successes, 2 threat, 1 Despair
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

"Excuse me, I need to see someone..." The interviewer steps out, and Dino resigns himself for being here for a long time.

by Lord Jo'ren Rath
Jo'ren weighed up the pros and cons of submitting to this treatment and eventually decided that it would be a useful test of his own discipline. Afterall, he didn't have anything to hide. Yet.

As a Sith he made good use of his privilege and skipped the lines of applicants. He trusted that Lt. Hin knew her way around forms well enough to check his work before turning it over to the Grade 11 bureaucrat.

Sliding into the interview chair, which creaked beneath his weight, Lord Rath waited patiently as the necessary checks were completed. Eyebrows were raised behind regulation Imperial eyeglasses.

"Everything appears to be in order my Lord. I rarely have the pleasure of seeing the regulation five stamps and triple signature all kept within the boxes."

Jo'ren smirked. "What a day to be alive. I'll be on my way then."

With the wheels of bureaucracy sufficiently greased, Lord Rath proceeded to get his chip and go about his perfectly legal, totally patriotic business.

Just go through the process, get your chip, and then utilize the extra access it provides. You've got this. It can't be that much worse than Kaas City.

Rowan approached the submission terminal with a paltry hand full of forms in hand. And was promptly sent back for another. A second return, a second count, and he was advised more would be required. But his interview was already fast tracked and scheduled.

D1 Papers Please, Submit Forms: Using Education: 1eP+2eA+1eD+1eC+2eS 4 failures, 3 advantage

The interview did not go any smoother.

"So you're here to see the Emperor?"

The noble shook his head.

"Then you're here for business?"

Another dismissive shake. "Ah, no."

"Then you're here for pleasure?"

A slight tilt of the head. "Is tourism really pleasurable? I'm here because it was recommended I come here before I enlist."

There was a "Tch" sound as more questions continued. Rowan began to suspect he should have just said "Yes."

D1 Papers Please, Interview: Using Cool, Boost from prior: 3eA+1eB+3eD+1eS 4 failures, 2 advantage

He finally settled somewhere moderately private as he looked over the resulting paperwork for errors.
D1 Formal Review (d10 chance of passing): 1d10 3

His eyes narrowed, and a cautious glance around followed before he started redoing the forms, cross referencing against his ID and other documents from his courier bag. What he'd failed at in improvisation, he had hopefully more than corrected with preparation.

Remmington shows up to get his tracking chip installed. Getting easier access and not being watched like a hawk as much appeals to him. So what if they know where he is and potentially can listen in on him. There are spies everywhere anyways. So may as well cooperate and make things easier for everyone.

He takes the special Sith access line and skips out a lot of the tedious interviewing process. He takes a look at the forms in front of him and fills them out as required. Once he has the chip installed he gets ready to go.

"Thanks for your assistance." He says to the hard working staff.

"Will this take much longer? I'm only here because of a project at the Massassi camp, but I have another project waiting in my lab."

Xal was ignored until his paperwork was handed back to him.

"A mistake? That's ridiculous. Let me see." He adjusted his goggles and looked over the forms. "Ah, I see. I can explain that..."
